Somebody at FX apparently looked at the American Horror Story alumni list and said:
“Call everybody.”
Because American Horror Story: 13 is shaping up less like a normal season and more like an AHS family reunion where half the guests are witches, murderers, ghosts, cult leaders and people who should absolutely not be allowed near sharp objects.
And honestly?
I’m seated.
After a long break following AHS: Delicate, Season 13 officially premieres September 24, 2026 on FX, and FX has now released its first teaser. The network is simply calling the installment AHS: 13 for now—no separate subtitle has been announced.
But the premiere date isn’t even the wildest part.
Jessica Lange Is Really Back
Let’s start with the woman I thought we were NEVER getting back.
Jessica. Lange.
Yes ma’am.
After years of making it sound like she had closed the door, locked it, sold the house and moved to another state, Jessica Lange is officially back in American Horror Story.
Season 13 marks her first AHS appearance since Apocalypse in 2018. Earlier set photos confirmed filming had begun with Lange involved, and the new teaser goes even further: Constance Langdon from Murder House is back.
CONSTANCE.
Baby.
Somebody hide the neighbors.
And apparently Jessica isn’t just showing up for one cute little scene and collecting a check.
Ryan Murphy has said Season 13 will involve actors playing multiple characters from across the history of the series. According to Murphy, Lange will portray several of her iconic AHS characters during the season.
So this isn’t simply:
“Jessica Lange returns to AHS.”
This is more like:
“Jessica Lange opened the closet and brought everybody with her.”
Sarah Paulson Is About to Be Working Overtime
Sarah Paulson is also back.
And somebody needs to make sure that woman has comfortable shoes because Ryan Murphy says she’s playing six or seven characters this season.
SIX OR SEVEN.
At this point Sarah is the cast.
Give everybody else the week off.
The teaser confirms the return of Cordelia Goode, the Supreme from Coven and Apocalypse.
And that leads us directly into the part that has AHS fans screaming:
The Coven Witches Are Back
Oh yes.
The witches are coming.
Sarah Paulson’s Cordelia Goode is returning, along with:
Angela Bassett as Marie Laveau
and
Emma Roberts as Madison Montgomery.
Gabourey Sidibe and Frances Conroy have also been connected to the new season, with set photos showing several familiar Coven faces together again.
Now before everybody grabs their black hat and starts screaming:
COVEN 2!
Ryan Murphy has specifically warned us that Season 13 is not simply another Coven season.
And THIS is where things get interesting.
Murphy says the season actually reaches across all the previous installments.
So apparently we aren’t just reopening Miss Robichaux’s Academy.
We’re opening the entire AHS filing cabinet.
Murder House, Cult, Freak Show AND Hotel Are Showing Up Too
The teaser is basically Ryan Murphy saying:
“You remember THAT nightmare? How about this one?”
We see Twisty the Clown from Freak Show.
Because apparently I wasn’t sleeping badly enough.
We see Rubber Man from Murder House.
And Evan Peters is shown returning as Kai Anderson from Cult.
Yes.
Kai.
That man made my blood pressure go up just watching him the first time.
And the teaser itself is set partly around a hotel environment that very obviously calls back to AHS: Hotel.
So we’re getting:
Murder House.
Coven.
Freak Show.
Hotel.
Cult.
Apocalypse.
And apparently much more.
Murphy has compared the setup to the Avengers of American Horror Story, with characters from across the franchise coming together against a major evil.
Baby.
The Avengers had Thanos.
AHS has trauma.
Same difference.
Evan Peters Is Playing Multiple Characters Too
Evan Peters isn’t returning just to play Kai.
Murphy says Evan will portray multiple past characters during Season 13.
And if you’re an original AHS fan, you already know how dangerous that sentence is.
This man has been:
Tate Langdon.
Kit Walker.
Kyle Spencer.
Jimmy Darling.
James Patrick March.
Kai Anderson.
And several other people who desperately needed therapy.
So the real question isn’t whether Evan Peters is coming back.
It’s:
Which version of Evan Peters is about to ruin everybody’s day?
Kathy Bates and Angela Bassett Are Back Too
The returning cast is honestly ridiculous.
Confirmed veterans include:
Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd, Gabourey Sidibe and Leslie Grossman.
Frances Conroy has also been spotted as part of the returning group.
Kathy Bates previously described the season as an “all-star season,” and looking at this lineup?
Girl.
She was not exaggerating.
But Ariana Grande Is NOT Coming Anymore
Now here’s the disappointing part.
Ariana Grande was originally announced for Season 13.
That had people excited because it would have reunited her with Ryan Murphy after Scream Queens.
But Ariana officially dropped out of Season 13 in July 2026 because of scheduling conflicts with her Eternal Sunshine tour.
According to Variety, she did not film scenes before leaving the production. Ryan Murphy has since publicly supported her decision.
So if you see an older Season 13 cast list with Ariana Grande on it:
Cross her off.
She is not currently part of the season.
And that’s exactly why I don’t trust those old “everything we know” articles from six months ago.
The tea has changed.
John Waters Is Joining American Horror Story
Here’s another casting choice I did NOT have on my bingo card.
John Waters is joining Season 13 in a mystery role.
Yes, THAT John Waters.
Director of Pink Flamingos, Hairspray, Serial Mom and enough beautifully strange movies to make him feel completely at home in the AHS universe.
Frankly, I don’t even need to know what he’s playing.
Put the man in a hallway.
Give him one creepy sentence.
I’ll be satisfied.
The expanded ensemble also includes several newer faces, including Avantika, Alex Consani and others appearing alongside the returning veterans.
Season 13 Has a Very Different Episode Schedule
And this surprised me.
According to the latest reporting, AHS: 13 will have 13 half-hour episodes rather than the traditional hour-long format.
The premiere is scheduled for Thursday, September 24, with multiple episodes dropping during the opening weeks before the season reaches its finale on October 29, 2026.
Thirteen episodes for Season 13.
Okay.
Somebody was committed to the theme.
So What Is Season 13 Actually About?
That is the big question.
FX still hasn’t released a traditional detailed plot synopsis.
What we DO know is that this is intentionally a franchise-spanning event.
FX’s official description teases the return of iconic horrors from earlier installments, while Ryan Murphy says the story connects characters from throughout AHS history rather than functioning strictly as Coven Part 3.
Murphy’s description makes it sound like familiar characters may have to unite against some kind of larger central evil.
Who or what that evil is?
Still under wraps.
And honestly?
GOOD.
Tell us enough to get excited and then hush.
I don’t need the entire plot in a trailer.
Netflix has traumatized us into knowing the whole movie before we press Play.
And Season 13 Is NOT the End
Now here’s one more piece of news I really wasn’t expecting.
Ryan Murphy says Season 13 will not be the final season of American Horror Story.
He’s already thinking about Season 14.
Sir.
We haven’t even survived 13 yet.
But according to Murphy, FX remains interested in continuing the franchise as long as he wants to keep making it.
So if you thought this giant returning cast meant:
“Everybody is back for one last goodbye…”
Apparently not.
AHS still has some bodies left to bury.
Horror Tea Verdict: Okay, NOW I’m Excited
Now, I’m going to say something I haven’t said about American Horror Story in a minute:
They got my attention.
Jessica Lange.
Angela Bassett.
Sarah Paulson.
Kathy Bates.
Evan Peters.
The Coven witches.
Constance Langdon.
Kai Anderson.
Twisty.
Rubber Man.
And multiple characters being played by the same veteran actors?
This could either be one of the most entertaining seasons AHS has ever done…
or an absolute hot mess with 47 characters walking through the same hotel lobby.
And you know what?
I will be watching either way.
Because if Jessica Lange came back after spending years telling everybody she was finished?
Baby, somebody showed that woman a script worth leaving the house for.
And THAT has me curious.
American Horror Story: 13 premieres September 24, 2026 on FX, with FX also promoting the season through Hulu.

My doors locked.
