If you finished Hereditary staring at that treehouse like:
“Excuse me, what cult meeting did I just walk into?”
You are not alone.
The big reveal is that almost everything happening to the Graham family was part of a plan started by Annie’s mother, Ellen.
Grandma wasn’t just controlling.
She was out here arranging a demonic inheritance.
Who Is Paimon?
Paimon is the demon worshipped by Ellen’s cult.
The cult believes Paimon can reward them with wealth and knowledge, but Paimon prefers a male host.
That becomes a problem because his first successful vessel in the Graham family is Charlie.
Was Charlie Really Paimon?
Basically, yes.
Charlie had been used as Paimon’s host from an extremely young age.
That helps explain why Ellen was so attached to her and why Charlie always seemed unusual.
The clicking.
The strange drawings.
The fascination with heads.
Baby, those were not just quirky-child hobbies.
But because Paimon wanted a male body, Charlie was never the cult’s final goal.
That was Peter.
Was Charlie’s Death an Accident?
Not really.
The telephone pole that kills Charlie has Paimon’s symbol carved into it, suggesting her death was part of the larger ritual.
Once Charlie dies, the path is cleared for Paimon to eventually move into Peter.
So while Peter believes he caused a horrible accident, the cult has been arranging events behind the scenes.
That family was playing a game without even knowing somebody else had the board.
Was Joan Part of the Cult?
Oh, Joan was absolutely in on it.
She meets Annie at the grief-support group and convinces her to perform a séance.
Annie thinks she is communicating with Charlie.
Instead, the séance helps move the cult’s plan forward.
Joan wasn’t Annie’s new grief buddy.
She was basically Paimon’s customer-service representative.
Why Does Annie Become Possessed?
After the séance, the supernatural activity gets much worse.
Annie discovers her mother’s connection to Paimon and realizes Joan is involved.
Then Steve dies after Annie throws Charlie’s sketchbook into the fireplace.
After that, Annie becomes fully possessed.
And suddenly Toni Collette is crawling across ceilings like gravity personally offended her.
Peter runs to the attic, where things somehow get even worse.
There are cult members standing around naked.
Annie is floating.
And Peter is officially having the worst family night imaginable.
Why Does Peter Jump Out the Window?
Peter becomes completely overwhelmed and jumps from the attic window.
But instead of simply dying, his body becomes the final vessel the cult needs.
A strange light enters him.
Peter gets up.
But Peter is no longer really Peter.
Paimon now has the male body the cult wanted.
Why Does Joan Call Peter “Charlie”?
Because the entity that lived through Charlie has now moved into Peter.
Joan recognizes that presence before formally welcoming Paimon into his new host.
So no, Peter didn’t literally become his sister.
Paimon simply moved from Charlie’s former vessel into Peter.
What Is Happening in the Treehouse?
Peter walks into Charlie’s treehouse and finds the cult waiting for him.
Joan is there.
Ellen’s remains are there.
A strange shrine has been prepared.
Everybody bows.
And Peter is crowned as Paimon.
That’s when we realize the cult won.
Charlie’s death.
Annie’s breakdown.
Steve’s death.
Peter’s terror.
All of it pushed the family exactly where the cult needed them.
This wasn’t just a haunting.
This was a whole operation.
Why Is the Movie Called Hereditary?
Because the movie is all about things passed from one generation to another.
Trauma.
Mental illness.
Family dysfunction.
And eventually, something supernatural.
Annie spends the movie worried about what her family may have inherited.
Turns out Grandma Ellen passed down something much worse than bad genetics.
She passed down a demon.
Ma’am.
Whatever happened to leaving the grandchildren a quilt?
My Take
What makes the ending so disturbing is that the Graham family never really understood what they were fighting.
They thought they were dealing with grief, tragedy and possibly mental illness.
Meanwhile, an entire cult had been planning around them.
By the time Annie understands what’s happening, it’s already too late.
And poor Peter?
That child spent the entire movie traumatized just to end up possessed by a demon king while naked strangers bowed to him in a treehouse.
There are easier ways to become popular.
Horror Tea Rating: ☕☕☕☕☕
5 out of 5 Tea Cups.
Creepy, tragic, smart and somehow capable of making me suspicious of grandmothers, telephone poles and treehouses all at once.
